Paketa Reviews and Testimonials

What Riders of Paketa Cycles are Saying…
Paketa Reviews and Testimonials “Hello and just a quick note to say we have been on the V2r for a few months now, and we are riding the perfect tandem! This is by far the best tandem we have ridden. Previous tandems owned were a Paketa V2, Calfee, Burley, and we still have a Co-Motion Supremo that is currently idle. The bike is very close to the V2, but it rides closer to a single bike, plus a little lighter with the single bike parts. Visually it is much cleaner with the right side drive. It is very responsive and efficient while pedaling. You don’t feel the internal torque in the bars and across the tires contact patch. The bike is completely stable at any speed and tracks on rails. The smoothness vs stiffness does not make sense, as if they are incompatible with each other, but yet they are both present in the ride. Great job”- Trey

“It [our V2r; dubbed the ‘Hot Tamale’] is the fastest, best handling and most comfortable bike we ride.We now have about 6000 miles, maybe more on the Hot Tamale.” –Chuck & Lisa

“We have been destroying our local fast group ride with the V2r. The Hed H3s and aerobars are a deadly combo. People hate us. We love it!” –Rick & Anne

“My wife and I have been riding performance tandems for 22 years, on nearly a dozen high-end brands [Calfee, CK2, Co-Motion, Santana, Cannondale, Fisher, Teesdale, etc.]. Our new Paketa is hands down the best tandem we have ever ridden. Light, stiff, stable, with a velvety ride. In just the first season with our Paketa, my wife and I set the goal of climbing the top ten paved passes in North America, all here in Colorado. Each pass was a 50 to 120 mile day, and required us to complete a summer season with over 100,000 feet of climbing [both training and the passes]. While we made the choice to get a Paketa not for racing, we found the performance of our Paketa tandem not only made the achievement of our goal possible, this was the most fun year we have ever had riding. The Paketa is a joy to climb with, we were inspired by the bike, and it performed flawlessly!” — Andy

I want to personally thank you both for an incredible opportunity & phenomenal memories. The Paketa was so fast; so much fun to race. And, as a result of having such superior equipment, Steve and I flew through that TT course at Master’s Nationals, winning a gold medal. That will always be an epic event in my life!  — Beth Graff – Gold Medalist, US Master’s National Championships, Mixed Tandem 110+ Time Trial

Well it’s truly our pleasure to ride the V2  because we think the bike is a remarkable piece of engineering & use of a VERY misunderstood/underappreciated material.  The combination of magnesium with the Topolino wheels produces what I believe is an unparalleled ride-ability with all the correct characteristics (lively, vibration damping, stiff, responsive …) While the old saw that “it’s the motor(s), not the bike” is mostly true,  this bike just flat out  DOES make us faster, especially when jumping/sprinting/accelerating & climbing.  We love this bike . — Dan & Dolores Coughlin

So took the Scud out for its inaugural ride Sunday AM.  Have a little 30 mile blast to a local Starbucks and back which I can squeeze in before Church on Sunday mornings.  This bike is ridiculous!!  On all the bad sections of road, where the Litespeed gets “squirmy”, this bike just bombs through like it’s on rails.  It’s cruel that I’m out of town this week.  Can’t wait for ride #2 now that I’ve done some final adjustments to the setup.  Haven’t used the PowerTap yet.  Waiting on a cassette for those wheels. — Hayden

My wife and I have been riding tandems since 1985, and over the years have owned 10 different tandems.   The Paketa was a revelation.   Riding a bike this light makes acceleration a delight, and also makes climbing so much more fun.    We were hoping for these traits and we got them.   But the real surprise came with the wonderful combination of stiffness  and compliance.  The Paketa is stiff  enough to allow easy stands for both of us on steep ascents, and pleasantly compliant enough for the stoker on rough roads.

I just received my new Paketa Magnesium bike and it simply rules! The characteristics of Mg are that of carbon, titanium, steel and aluminum materials rolled into one super light bike. It has the dampening qualities of Carbon but doesn’t feel dead; it has the comfort of titanium and steel but is way lighter and it has the agility of aluminum but stronger (due to thicker tube walls). Paketa did a beautiful thing. I just thought I would pass along to fellow cyclists. Later, I’m heading out and doing a century.

I’ve already had several unsolicited inquiries on the road from cyclists about how I like the magnesium- during training rides, and again yesterday, while warming up for a crit at the State Patrol venue in Golden. I always tell them the same thing…that the bikes are everything positive that they may have heard about, only more so! After my first race on it yesterday, I am even happier with the Paketa than I was before. It raced stiff and lively, snappy, but very precisely controllable.  It gave me a great deal of confidence on the course.  Bottom line-I am extremely proud to be racing on a Paketa, and I’m sure everyone else on RMRC feels the same way. We’ll keep passing the good word!  — Jeff Hammond Rocky Mountain Road Club

Hey guys, this is Ted Fisher, whom you so awesomely sold one of your bikes last November.  This fall, I was helping a friend replace the pads on his motorcycle brakes in a garage, and he dropped his motorcycle on my Paketa!  My friend was appalled and offered to buy me a new bike.  We lifted the bike off my bike and took a look.  Somehow, it survived unscathed except for a tiny bit of scratched decal on the logo on the downtube (still legible).  Talk about dent resistant!  Anyway, the bike is still treating me well.  I’ve been riding it daily since I bought it, except for about a week when I broke my collarbone June 2006 (and about 3 weeks of riding it one-handed after that).  This winter’s been a true test.  That first big storm on 20 Dec, I could get off the bike and it would stay standing upright! I’m now working at NIST here in Boulder on an atomic gyroscope, and also attending classes at CU.  I try to park it prominently at both (though up at CU I U-lock it and cable lock the wheels). The XT stuff has treated me very well.  I seldom have had to adjust the dérailleurs.  The disks are vital and way easier to deal with than even my old XT v-brakes (which are a huge improvement over non-articulated v-brakes, and cantilevers are right out).  The combo break/shifter levers have never shifted while I was breaking, as the range of motion seems to be separated enough that they’re two independent channels from the same lever.  Also, in a wreck, I’ve found that what would have bent or broken a break lever merely causes a shifted gear.  I have replaced the chain, that dérailleur hanger, and the tires (which I wore smooth, and am running slime tubes due to those accursed goat-head thorn weeds that have infested the area). Everything about that beast of a bike says longevity and performance under harsh treatment.  Thanks again for the hookup, and best of luck getting more of them on and off the road!  — Ted

Hi Dave – We love the tandem;  it’s very responsive on the hills. Thanks!  — Greg Rancourt

Guys – Just wanted to let you know that I raced the new Paketa in Golden this morning at the Tokyo Joe’s Crit.  I wasn’t originally going to race the new bike this morning because I have only done 2 training rides on it so far, but I woke up and said what the heck.  Glad I did. The ride is so smooth and it is much stiffer than my older model Trek carbon bike. The power put into the pedals seemed to drive the bike foward easily with little wasted effort, which helped me save energy since I was racing in 2 separate groups this morning, SM4 and 35+ 4’s back to back.  I placed 8th and 6th and while they weren’t W’s, the results weren’t too bad for my third time riding the bike. Thanks for a great product and I look forward to riding my new ‘Rocket’ to better and better results. — Dave

Excellent job in the TTT, I hope you guys had fun out there! — Jim

Thanks for getting the bike dialed in during the build, I haven’t tweeked anything and the fit is dead on.  — Thanks again – Sargent

Hi Dave – Yeah, the bike is good.  I’ve been enjoying riding it.  Built it up with Dura-Ace, Ksyrium SL wheels and an SRM.  Has been great so far (knock on wood).  Total weight is about 17.5 lbs.  Definitely a good ride.  Can tell there’s some road noise absorption, but don’t feel like it’s soft when it comes to putting power to it.  Stiff on one hand, supple on the other – nice combination.  Hope to do the USAFA Road Race this weekend, then use it for the Haystack TTT the following Saturday, then Gila. Raced one of the Stazio crits and the Koppenburg Circuit.  Felt good (the bike and personally).  Hope to continue to improve and have a good outing at Gila.  Sargent and Lee showed off their bikes at last nights team meeting.  Very nice. — Bruce

Stronger Than Carbon Fiber and Aluminum

Magnesium is the finest bicycle tubing material out there.
Stronger Than Carbon Fiber and Aluminum

magnesium bicycle frame production using TIG welding

Relative Weight of Magnesium Bicycle Frames

Magnesium is the lightest structural metal currently available in the world. Its approximately 34% lighter by volume than aluminum and 50% lighter than titanium. Besides light-weight construction, a few of the other advantages that magnesium offers are: excellent fatigue resistance, denting and buckling resistance, and the highest known damping capacity of any structural metal. The result is a much smoother ride than any other material out there.

Its no secret amongst the inner sanctum of bicycle fame builders and designers around the world that magnesium could make an amazingly rideable, high-performance bicycle. First, though, a few key issues needed to be overcome: how to extrude the perfect magnesium tubes, weld these tubes correctly, and fine-tune the ride qualities. Following four years of intensive research and lots of hard work on the drawing board and in the shop, we have done just that.

Thickness of Magnesium Bicycle TubingWe are often asked whether Paketa’s magnesium bicycle tubing is a marketing maneuver akin to “scandium” frames, for example, where the material is actually just another aluminum alloy with a small percentage of scandium – or maybe magnesium? The simple answer is, “No!” Paketa’s proprietary bicycle tubing is a carefully chosen material comprising about 92% magnesium, alloyed with other metals to achieve optimal mechanical properties while facilitating the extrusion and welding processes.

Damping is a measure of the rate at which unforced vibration disappears, and is an intrinsic property of the material. Because magnesium has the highest known damping capacity of any structural metal – as much as 10 times greater than steel, titanium, or aluminum – the ride is truly amazing. Vibration from the road literally disappears within the structure of the frame and never reaches the rider. For this same reason, magnesium is used in the high-tech world of aerospace hardware; they have discovered that magnesium offers the best platform on which to mount sensitive electronic equipment, as it is so “quiet”.

Being able to ride longer and with less fatigue are the direct benefits, but the indirect benefits of magnesium might be even more important. Because vibration is not transferred through the frame, the fatigue life is nearly immeasurable. A magnesium bike will keep the exceptional initial ride qualities longer than anything else available on the market today.

Many people ask if Magnesium corrodes more easily than other materials. The answer is NO. There is no added risk of corrosion in a Magnesium bike.

What do people think?

What do people think about the Paketa V2 Tandem?

A note from Dave Walker, Tandem enthusiast, guru, and designer of the V2:

I’ve been riding, designing, and tinkering with tandems for nearly 20 years and have logged over 200,000 km on them in that time. I love cycling of all types, but tandems are the heart of my passion. One of the nice things about the Paketa V2 design is that standover height, either front or rear, is almost never an issue. It really comes down to getting the right captain top tube length; thus, the three (stock) frame sizes offered of 54, 56, and 58 cm effective (i.e., measured horizontally) captain top tube lengths.

Stoker top tube length is the same on all frames; proper fit is achieved with the correct (often times, adjustable-length) stoker stem. It’s that simple.

As for comfort vs. stiffness, there’s a few things I can tell you about that. What sets the V2 apart from all other tandems on the market is the very high ratio of stiffness to weight without producing a harsh ride. First and foremost is realizing that the material properties of magnesium (Mg) afford a vibration-damping capacity that is about an order of magnitude (that is, 10X) better than steel, aluminum, or titanium (which are all comparable, by the way). Thus, it’s not just a marketing gimmick: ten times better vibration damping is enough that even casual “weekend warrior” riders can feel the difference. Comparing Mg to carbon fiber (CF) is a bit more difficult because the stiffness, weight, and vibration-damping characteristics of CF are highly dependent on how the material is used: lay-up, tube size/configuration, etc. But, I’ve ridden a number of CF tandems, and while they’re not bad, for my money the Mg produces a better ride while still having that resilient feel of a fine metal frame without any weight penalty.

On a personal note, over 1/2 of those 200,000+ km I’ve put on tandems in the past 20 years were on a Cannondale aluminum road model. Compared to the C’dale, well, to put it simply, there is no comparison: the Paketa is way lighter, just as stiff, and much more comfortable. Interestingly enough, most people who try a Paketa tandem for the first time comment first on the exceptional ride quality and then on the lively, predictable handling. Light weight is obviously good for hill-climbing (and we certainly appreciate that here in Colorado, too), but as a practical matter it comes in handy more often than you realize. My own V2 is right at 11 kg and is the first tandem (out of 20+) we’ve owned that my wife can lift onto a conventional car roof rack by herself, with ease–it’s actually lighter than her own full-suspension titanium mountain bike! Living with the bike, day in and day out, is truly a joy.

Hi Dave

We love the tandem;  it’s very responsive on the hills. Thanks!

Greg Rancourt

Good Morning Nick,

The team sent the three tandems to the State TT Championships this weekend and came home with two gold and a silver.  Dave’s bike (the large) set the fastest time overall.  They are smokin’ bikes!  We all agreed that compared to the Calfee and Santana tandems we used last year, the Paketas are off the chart.  They turn great, barely flex and are so comfortable, even in a TT position that it made the effort a lot less painful than last year.  See the photos.  When we get our State jerseys we will shoot some more photos for you that you may want to use in your advertising.  A lot of people are noticing and asking about the bikes.  We’re hoping to generate some sales for you.

Bruce

Well we took our new V2 for her maiden ride yesterday evening. What a ride!   The wind was blowing well over 20mph and our first 9 miles were straight into it! The bike handled flawlessly, I was used to being worn out from holding up our old tandem in such a wind but this one just cut right through it. We made the turn at 15 mph average and then the fun really began!  Talk about responsive!  I wanted to not only hammer into the wind but I wanted to set her sail with the wind, believe me, it did not disappoint us…We finished strong and the bike rode tremendously well on rough pavement, it just absorbed it and when we smashed those wonderful pedals, it almost jumped out from under us! (Not once did my feet go numb from the pressure with these pedals) woohoo!
The fit of the bike is wonderful…It feels like I am on my single and it handles on a rail…What is really cool is when my stoker moves around to drink or speak to the people as we zooom by them, the bike does not waver as our old tandem did….( my shoulders love that)”

-Barry

Hi Nick,

I thought I would send you a picture of the white tandem built up.  We have been riding it for 5 weeks and it’s been a great ride.  We couldn’t be happier with the performance.  Very light and stiff.  We look forward to taking it to Nationals again this year.  The first stop is our first State Championship race the end of the month.  We’ll keep you posted and send you results.  There will be three Paketa tandems in that race thanks to you guys!

Thanks so much for your support,
David Prechtl

First ride: Very smooth!  My wife and I both thought this was the smoothest bike we have ever ridden. Not to mention fast! We got up to 32mph without digging deep at all. Cruising around at 22-23mph at a “base” or “fat burner”effort. We’re very pleased with the bike. It’s about 23.5 lbs with pedals and cages. We will drop a small amount of weight when we change stems (“fitting” stems on there now), and change to lighter stoker stubs.

Lightweight performance touring tandems

NEW! The Paketa R2 performance touring tandem brings the lightness and ride quality of our famous racing tandems to the touring world.

We have been commanding the advancement of the racing tandem market since we debuted the V2 in 2003. Other brands have been striving to compete with the weight, performance, and ride quality of our famous magnesium racing tandems. Now you don’t have to be into racing to benefit from the lightweight and supple ride quality you can only get on a Paketa. The R2 is a new benchmark for touring tandems everywhere. Tandem tourers can now go farther with less energy with the exceptionally light R2 performance touring tandem bicycle. The magnesium frame absorbs a great amount of vibration from the road so your body doesn’t have to. That means you will be able to ride  longer with less fatigue and greater comfort. Our oversized magnesium tubing not only provides an incredible ride quality, it also provides superior stiffness making our tandems some of the best handling tandems on the road. The combination of stiffness and ride quality make the R2 a great option for performance oriented touring tandem riders everywhere.

Key features of the R2 performance touring tandem

  • Light-weight magnesium frame that is built tough with a Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • Custom chainstay yoke for ultimate rear-end stiffnes and large tire clearance
  • Standard road bike gearing options or internally geared options
  • Rohloff Hub and Gates Carbon Belt Drive options
  • S&S couplers are optional for a lightweight travel tandem

The R2 Performance touring tandem provides, not only un-matched performance, but also great versatility. Racks and fenders can be added for those who need them, and many touring trailers work great on the R2. The R2 can be built for tire clearance of up to 40mm, and riders have a great many options for disc brakes, cantilever brakes, and v-brakes. We can design your bike for road bike style drop handlebars, mountain bike style riser bars, or touring style cowhorn bars. If you want to keep the weight down we can set your bike up with standard gearing, or you can choose to use a Rohloff or other internally geared hub. Belt drives are also available for internally geared hub options, and the frame is designed to use a Gates belt transfer drive as well.

Because of the innovative “compact open” low-top-tube design, frame sizes become almost irrelevant. Standover height is ample for almost anybody front or rear, and with a 72.5 cm (28.5”) stoker top tube you’ll never hear any complaints of cramped rear quarters. A quality adjustable stoker stem helps to fine tune the fit of the stoker. The R2 is available with custom geometry or in a small, medium, large, and extra-large with different length captain’s top tubes. Captain’s top tubes are customizeable to the 1/2 centimeter. We can make a suggestion based on your measurements, or you can have us match your existing tandem or single bike. Our standard sizing goes as follows: Small: 54 cm, Medium: 56cm, Large: 58cm, XL: 61cm.We can customize the rider position to be as aggressive or as upright as you want. Don’t hesitate to email us with any questions.

Just to let you know that after the 3rd op on my right shoulder, and 3 months off the bike, I could finally test out my new tandem. I must tell you that its the most awesome bike. Its as stiff and responsive as my top of the range single, and just the most unbelievable ride. Its the motivation I need to get fit. I shopped around extensively before finding your site. Looks like I made the right choice. I am sure you’ll get many enquiries from fellow South African Cyclists. This bike is causing quite a stir. Now just need to get fit and do it justice!!” – Patrick  paketa R2 rohloff belt drive tandem bicycle

 Sternum to Floor
This is the vertical measurement from the bottom of the sternal notch (bone notch below the Adam’s apple where the collarbones meet) to the floor.

Stand up straight facing a wall with feet 2″ apart and toes touching the wall. Hold a pencil horizontally in your sternal notch, pointing outward, and mark the wall with it. Measure up from the floor to the mark. An alternative method is to have a friend measure from the floor up to the bottom of a carpenter’s level extending out from your sternal notch.

 Crotch to Floor
Standing up straight with your feet 2″ apart, pull a leveled broomstick or a carpenter’s 3-foot level firmly against your crotch, holding it with one hand in front of you and one hand behind you. It should be level and as snug as if you were straddling a fence rail with your legs hanging down off either side. The goal is to fully compress the soft tissue up against the lower edge of the pelvic bone. If you face a wall when doing this and mark the wall at the top edge of the broomstick, you can do this measurement yourself (if you use a large book slid firmly up between your legs instead of the level or broomstick, with one edge of the against the wall, this will ensure that its top edge is level, but it is much more difficult to pull a book up as firmly into the crotch as necessary, unlike a broomstick). Mark the wall at the top edge of the book or broomstick, and measure from the mark down to the floor. Or, have a friend measure from the top of the leveled broomstick or carpenter’s level down to the floor.
 Shoulder to Wrist
Find the lateral tip of your shoulder blade by placing your palm on top of your shoulder with your thumb against your neck; your fingers should be touching the top edge of your shoulder blade. Slide your hand outward away from your neck, and let your fingers find the furthest outward point of the top edge of your shoulder blade (this is the posterior tip of your acromion bone, which sits atop your shoulder joint). Have a friend measure from that point to your wrist bone (on the little finger side) while holding your elbow straight and your arm out from your side at a 45-degree angle.
 Thigh Length
Sit on a stool with your lower legs vertical and your back pressed flat against a wall. Adjust the stool height with phone books until your thighs are level. Measure from the face of a dowel or book placed against the fronts of your knees to the wall.
 Lower Leg Length
Sitting as above, place the dowel or book across the tops of your knees, and measure down from its underside to the floor.
 Crank Length
If you have a preference, write it in. Otherwise we will make a recommendation based on your inseam measurement.

Paketa Scud Custom Magnesium Road Bike

Long distance comfort and durability

The Scud is our most versatile bike yet. We designed this bike to be a fast racing machine for larger riders as well as a smooth and durable ride for expert recreational cyclists. The Scud takes all of the great characteristics of the Rocket to the next level. The beefier ovalized downtube and top tube create more lateral and torsional stiffness and increases the durability of the front end. The large oval seatstays and chainstays strengthen and stiffen the rear end, and the sweeping chainstay design helps to provide more damping in the rear of the bike. The added stiffness and damping help to keep you in control in fast tight turns, so you can always cut to the inside and take the straightaway. Magnesium’s unique vibration damping ability is multiplied with the Scud due to the extra material. That means you get an even stiffer frame than the Rocket with a smoother ride.

There is a small amount of weight gain with the added material, but a frame still weigh’s in under 4lbs. “I raced the new Paketa this morning. Glad I did. The ride is so smooth and it is much stiffer than my older model Trek carbon bike. The power put into the pedals seemed to drive the bike foward easily with little wasted effort, which helped me save energy since I was racing in 2 separate groups this morning.”

Paketa’s custom magnesium road racing bicycle frames are light, stiff, and fast! Aerospace engineering enters into the double-butted, bi-ovalized, and aero-shaped downtubes. Thousands of road kilometers determined Paketa’s exclusive frame geometry, and years of experience have gone into perfecting the proprietary manufacturing processes.

All this adds up to one thing: A bicycle frame light enough for the high mountains, aero enough for solo breakaways, and stiff enough for bunch sprints. Throw in the “X”-Factor (magnesium’s unique ability to tame road shock and vibration), and now you’ve got the freshest legs in the peloton!

We have three frame models for our line of road bikes, the Rocket, the Rocket Venus, and the Scud. The Rocket is the superlight racing model, the Venus is our women’s specific bike, and the Scud is stiffer and stronger for heavier riders or those looking for a more durable bike.

The Paketa Rocket magnesium road racing bike is superlight, stiff, and yes, fast! This bike is designed for the most competitive athletes. Magnesium has the highest strength to weight ratio of any frame material, which means even our lightest bikes are stronger than a comparable carbon fiber or aluminum bike. Since magnesium absorbs shock and vibration better than any other frame material, you get a light, responsive bike with a super smooth ride. Once you ride your first Paketa, you’ll never ride another bike again. Aerospace engineering enters into the double-butted, bi-ovalized, and aero-shaped downtubes. “After my first race on it yesterday, I am even happier with the Paketa than I was before. It raced stiff and lively, snappy, but very precisely controllable. It gave me a great deal of confidence on the course. I am extremely proud to be racing on a Paketa” – Steve

Paketa Custom Cycles Warranty Policy

Lifetime Warranty on all Paketa bikes

All Paketa bicycle frames that were ordered after April 15th, 2012 are warranted for the lifetime of the frame against defects in materials and workmanship. Bike frames ordered before April 15th carry the previous warranty that was in effect at the time of order (6 year warranty against manufaturers defects). Frames damaged due to crashes, misuse, improper component installation or operation, or improper care and maintenance, or any other instance that is not determined by the manufacturer to be a defect will not be covered under warranty. No bicycle frame will last forever, but Paketa frames are warrantied for the reasonable lifetime of the frame. A reasonable lifetime of a frame will vary depending on the user.  Following the simple care guidelines will allow your frame to last many years with no issues. Frames received as a warranty replacement do not carry a warranty. Customers that wish to warranty a frame should email a digital photo of the bike that clearly shows the damage. Include your Name, phone #, address, date and place the frame was purchased, and the serial #. We will also need a copy of the proof of purchase. The Customer will be responsible for shipping costs. Any modifications made to the frame, including re-painting voids the warranty.
